Russian court interpreter – Cyrillic script, patronymics and official documents
• the Russian document does not have to be from Russia – the country of issue is important
• patronymic is transmitted as part of personal data
• different passports and periods may use different transliteration
Russian is used in documents from several countries, so the country of issue is as important as the language. In the case of personal documents, we check the name, patronymic, surname and official transliteration, and in the case of older documents, the historical name of the institution or country.
Russian documents often contain a full name with a patronymic, Cyrillic script, and multiple official seals. In the case of older Soviet documents, the country of issue and the current country of use may be different, so we check the terminology and the form of the name according to the document, and not according to an assumption. You will find related translations and language pairs in the overview European languages.
When is a court interpreter for the Russian language needed?
Birth and marriage certificates, criminal record certificates, diplomas, employment records or seniority certificates, court decisions, powers of attorney and business contracts are most often translated. Documents from countries of the former USSR may contain Russian in addition to the local language, which should be recorded before the offer.
Russian documents that we translate most often
- Birth certificates and personal status certificates
- Criminal record, residence and citizenship certificates
- Diplomas, school certificates, academic transcripts and university certificates
- Certificates of work, seniority and social security
- Court decisions, powers of attorney and notarial documents
- Business registers, contracts, technical and financial documents
These are common examples, but we translate other documents too. When reviewing your request for Russian translation, we pay particular attention to the Cyrillic alphabet, patronymics, official transliteration, possible local languages, stamps and old Soviet forms.
Russian documents: patronymics, passports, registers and legal forms
Russian official documents often state a personal name in the three-part structure first name-patronymic-surname. In case of international use, the Latin entry from the passport also appears, so the translation must connect both forms without losing the identity of the person.
For the Latin form of the name, the passport has priority. If an older document uses a different transliteration, we do not hide the difference, but resolve it in a way that suits the purpose of the document.
Personal documents and passport record
For birth, marriage, police and other personal documents, we compare the Cyrillic notation with the Latin form from the passport. We do not correct transliteration differences randomly, but resolve them consistently throughout the entire document package.
Patronymic
A patronymic is not a middle name in the same sense as in some Western systems. If it is listed in the original, we transfer it as a separate element of the personal name and make sure that digital forms or tables do not combine it with the surname.
Business and court documents
We check the name of the body, the legal form of the company and the registration number for court decisions, powers of attorney and registration extracts. We do not only translate the abbreviations of legal forms letter by letter, but according to the actual function in the original system.
Document certification from the Russian-language administrative system – what to check before ordering
A certified translation for official use is prepared by an appointed permanent court interpreter for Russian, subject to availability and the receiving authority’s requirements. We check Cyrillic script, patronymics, official transliteration, any other languages, seals and older Soviet forms. If direct certification is unavailable, we seek confirmation from the competent authority. Check the number of copies, attachment to an original or copy, and any Apostille requirement before ordering.
Interpretation: Russian and Croatian in official and business situations
We arrange interpreting for business meetings, appointments with a notary or registrar, conversations with the employer, court and administrative proceedings and other official appointments agreed in advance. For the Russian language, before booking, we check the variant or regional form when relevant, the place, date, duration and topic. If the organiser or competent authority requires the presence of a permanent court interpreter, this should be stated when sending the request.
Apostille and legalisation for Russian-language documents
An Apostille confirms the origin of a public document for international use; it does not replace a certified translation. The requirements and the order of the steps depend on the countries involved and the receiving institution. We explain the process in our Apostille guide.
What we check before confirming the Russian translation
Before quoting, we check three things in particular: the Russian document does not have to be from Russia – the country of issue is important; patronymic is transmitted as part of personal data; different passports and periods may use different transliteration. We then confirm the scope, source and target languages, available form of certification, total price, deadline and delivery arrangements. Your quote reflects the actual work involved, rather than an estimate based only on page count.
What to send for an accurate assessment of a document from the Russian-language administrative system
- Attach a legible scan of each page for the Russian translation, along with the reverse sides and all certifications.
- Specify the source and target languages, the country of issue, the purpose of use, the requested deadline and information about the certification. In particular, we will check the Cyrillic alphabet, patronymic, official transliteration, possible local languages, stamps and old Soviet patterns.
- For the Russian translation, we conclude the offer only after checking all pages, the availability of experts and the request for a certified translation.
- Once you confirm the order, we translate and check your document. We send the digital file and arrange delivery of any certified paper copies.
What affects the price and deadline of document translation from the Russian-language administrative system?
We base your quote on the actual document: number of words and pages, terminology, copy quality, source and target languages, certification and desired deadline. In the case of interpreting, the duration, location and preparation are also taken into account. Older documents, handwritten stamps and a combination of Russian with other languages can increase the verification time. We state the exact amount and deadline only after reviewing the material and confirming the availability of the appropriate specialist.
