Medical translation for patients, institutions and businesses

When is medical translation needed?

  • Treatment or diagnostic procedures abroad and continued care in Croatia
  • A second opinion or consultation with a specialist or international medical centre
  • Insurance, reimbursement, a medical expert assessment or an administrative procedure
  • Employment, fitness certificates or occupational health documentation
  • Clinical research, specialist training and communication between healthcare institutions
  • Instructions, technical and regulatory materials for medical devices and equipment

Medical documents we translate

  • Medical reports, specialist reports and laboratory results
  • Discharge summaries, medical histories and operation reports
  • Radiology, histopathology and diagnostic reports
  • Vaccination, health status and fitness-for-work certificates
  • Informed consent forms, questionnaires and clinical research documents
  • Instructions for use, safety information and medical equipment materials
  • Invoices, estimates and administrative documents related to treatment

Terminology, abbreviations and units

A medical abbreviation can have different meanings depending on the speciality and country. We do not expand it arbitrarily. We review the surrounding text, report type and terminology used in the target healthcare system. Where uncertainty remains, we may retain the abbreviation with a note or request clarification.

Numerical data, decimal separators, reference ranges, doses and units receive additional checks. We do not convert units without express agreement, as conversion may cause the original document to be misinterpreted.

For patients
Send records chronologically and identify the doctor, institution, insurer or procedure for which they are intended. The purpose helps determine the appropriate terminology and level of explanation.

Patient records and regulatory documents require different approaches

A report submitted to a doctor must be faithful, readable and consistent with medical terminology. Medical device documentation may additionally require a terminology database, version control, consistency with existing instructions and technical formatting. We therefore base the quote on the actual document type.

Patient materials should be understandable, but the source meaning must not be simplified in a way that changes the medical message. A plain-language version can be commissioned as a separate editing service.

Certification and personal data protection

Some institutions accept an uncertified specialist translation; others require a translation certified by a court interpreter. Check with the hospital, insurer, employer or relevant authority. We confirm certification availability after reviewing the language, document and deadline.

Medical records contain health information, a special category of personal data. Provide only the material needed for assessment, use the agreed transfer channel and specify requirements for confidentiality, restricted access or deletion after completion.

How to prepare medical records

  1. Scan every page clearly and retain the original order.
  2. Specify the target language, country, institution and purpose.
  3. Add a list of medicine, doctor or institution names if handwriting is unclear.
  4. Identify urgent documents and those provided for context only.
  5. Confirm whether certification, paper copies or a specific format are required.

Medical translation prices and turnaround

The cost reflects volume, language pair, medical speciality, legibility, tables, handwriting, formatting, certification and deadline. For larger records, we first establish which documents need full translation and which provide context. This avoids unnecessary cost while preserving the treatment chronology.

Frequently asked questions

Can you translate a handwritten medical report?

We can translate legible passages. We do not guess illegible text; we request a clearer copy or mark it as illegible.

Can you explain a diagnosis or recommend treatment?

No. Translation conveys the document’s content and does not replace consultation with a doctor or other healthcare professional.

Does a medical translation need certification?

This depends on the recipient and purpose. A specialist translation may suffice for treatment, while an insurer, court, employer or administrative body may request certification.

Can I send only the most important pages?

You can identify priorities, but the translator may need additional pages for context, abbreviations, treatment and chronology. We agree what is translated and what is for reference before starting.

Do you offer urgent medical translations?

We assess urgent deadlines after reviewing the volume, speciality and legibility. Speed must not remove terminology and numerical checks.

Send your document: Send readable medical records and specify the target language, institution, purpose, certification requirements and deadline. You will receive a clear scope, price and feasible delivery date, with confidential handling of your data.
