Court interpreter for the Serbian language – Cyrillic, Latin and official documents from Serbia
• Cyrillic and Latin can appear in the same case
• a similar Croatian term does not have to have the same legal function
• the Latin notation of the personal name is aligned with the passport
A Serbian document can be in Cyrillic, Latin or a combination of both. In the official translation, we do not rely on linguistic similarity with Croatian, but check the legal term, personal name record and issuing institution so that the document remains unambiguous.
Serbian is officially written in Cyrillic, and Latin is also widely used in practice. Therefore, the translation begins by checking the script, official names and the consistency of personal names between different documents. Croatian and Serbian are mutually intelligible, but in a certified translation, the terminology must be based on the original and not on linguistic similarity. When is a court interpreter needed for the Serbian language?
Most often, birth and marriage certificates, certificates of criminal record, diplomas, employment contracts, court decisions, powers of attorney and real estate documents are translated. Business users send registers, contracts, invoices and technical documentation.
Documents from Serbia in Cyrillic and Latin
- Civil registry documents and certificates from official records
- Criminal record, residence and citizenship certificates
- Diplomas, certificates and academic transcripts
- Court decisions, powers of attorney and notarial documents
- Employment contracts and employment documentation
- Business contracts, registers, financial and technical documents
This list covers commonly requested documents, but is not exhaustive. You can also send another type of document for Serbian translation, we pay particular attention to the script, the official Latin-script spelling of the name, Serbian administrative and legal names, seals and the correspondence of the data.
Serbia: Cyrillic, Latin and official identification data
Serbian official documents can be in Cyrillic or Latin, and some forms contain both letters. In a certified translation, it is not enough just to “transfer” the script: we check the official record of the name, JMBG, document number, name of the body and all seals.
Ekavian and Ijekavian forms and various administrative terms are not treated as errors of the original. The translation conveys the meaning of the document and clearly identifies the institution, the document and the persons to whom it refers.
Registry books and personal data
Extracts from registers and certificates may contain the Cyrillic entry of the name in addition to the Latin entry in the passport. When translating, we match the personal name with the identification document and, if necessary, note the difference between the original and the Latin form.
Educational documents
Diplomas, certificates and grade transcripts have terminology that is not identical to the Croatian system. We transfer the name of the school, faculty, study program and qualification so that it remains clear what is the original name and what is the function description.
Court and business documents
We check the name of the court or registry, the business form and the designation of the case for decisions, powers of attorney, contracts and register extracts. Linguistic similarity with Croatian does not justify skipping parts of the document or automatically equating legal terms.
Document authentication from Serbia – what to check before ordering
A certified translation for official use is prepared by an appointed permanent court interpreter for Serbian, subject to availability and the receiving authority’s requirements. Before accepting the assignment, we check the script, the official Latin-script spelling of names, Serbian administrative and legal names, stamps and data consistency. If direct certification is unavailable, we do not assume a substitute procedure, but ask for confirmation from the competent authority. Before you order, we also check the number of copies, whether the translation must be attached to the original or a copy, and any Apostille requirements.
Interpretation: Serbian and Croatian in official and business situations
We arrange interpreting for business meetings, appointments with a notary or registrar, conversations with the employer, court and administrative proceedings and other official appointments agreed in advance. For the Serbian language, before booking, we check the variant or regional form when relevant, place, date, duration and topic. If the organiser or competent authority requires the presence of a permanent court interpreter, this should be stated when sending the request.
Apostille and legalisation for a document from Serbia
Check Apostille requirements separately from translation requirements. Some authorities ask for the original to be legalised before it is translated; others accept a different order. Before placing your order, confirm the receiving authority’s instructions and read our Apostille guide.
What we check before confirming the Serbian translation
Before quoting, we check three things in particular: Cyrillic and Latin can appear in the same item; a similar Croatian term does not have to have the same legal function; the Latin notation of the personal name is aligned with the passport. We then confirm the scope, source and target languages, available form of certification, total price, deadline and delivery arrangements. Your quote reflects the actual work involved, rather than an estimate based only on page count.
What to send for an accurate assessment of a document from Serbia
- To evaluate the Serbian translation, send clear copies of the entire document, including reverse sides, stamps and attachments.
- Specify the source and target languages, the country of issue, the purpose of use, the requested deadline and information about the certification. In particular, we will check the script, the official Latin-script spelling of names, Serbian administrative and legal names, seals, and the matching of data.
- By reviewing the Serbian document, we determine the actual scope and necessary expertise, and then confirm the certification, price, deadline and number of copies.
- Your quote covers translation and a final review. It also sets out the format, the number of certified copies and the delivery arrangements.
What affects the price and deadline of document translation from Serbia?
The price is not determined only by the number of pages. The density of the text, tables, seals, area, source and target languages, certification and urgency are taken into account, and in the case of interpretation, the place, duration and preparatory materials. Documents with a combination of Cyrillic and Latin letters or more official seals require an additional verification of names and markings. We state the exact amount and deadline only after reviewing the material and confirming the availability of the appropriate specialist.
