Court interpreter for the Portuguese language – documents from Portugal and Brazil

What you need to know
• European and Brazilian Portuguese differ in terms of administrative terminology
• the names of educational qualifications and public bodies must be interpreted according to the state
• personal names and multiple surnames should be transmitted consistently throughout the course

We make translations from Portuguese to Croatian and from Croatian to Portuguese for personal documents, diplomas, work and business related to Portugal or Brazil. For certified translation or official interpreting, we check suitable court interpreter availability and the receiving authority’s requirements before confirming the assignment. After reviewing the complete document, we send you a quote covering the scope, total price, deadline and delivery arrangements.

The country of issue is important because European and Brazilian Portuguese are not exactly equal in administrative, legal and educational terminology. Before preparing a quote, we therefore ask for the original document, country and purpose of submission. With personal data, we check the full record of names and all surnames. You will find related translations and language pairs in the overview European languages.

Portuguese documents for personal, educational and business procedures

Citizens need a translation for marriage, citizenship, residence, employment, recognition or evaluation of foreign educational qualifications and court proceedings. Companies order it for contracts, registers, accounts, technical materials and communication with partners. If a document comes from Brazil, we do not automatically adapt the terminology to Portugal, or vice versa.

Documents from Portugal and Brazil that we most often translate

  • Birth and marriage certificates, certificates of marital status and citizenship
  • Criminal record certificates, residence and administrative decisions
  • Diplomas, academic transcripts and certificates of professional qualifications
  • Court decisions, powers of attorney and notarial documents
  • Employment contracts, tax and social documents
  • Business registers, contracts, financial and technical content

This list covers commonly requested documents, but is not exhaustive. You can also send another type of document for Portuguese translation, we pay particular attention to whether the document originates from Portugal, Brazil or another Portuguese-speaking country.

Portugal and Brazil: same linguistic basis, different official systems

The same term can be called differently or have a different administrative function in Portugal and Brazil. In translation, we rely on a specific system and document, not on a general list of synonyms.

In the case of diplomas and professional qualifications, the title is not automatically equated with the Croatian degree. It is translated descriptively and verifiably, so that the decision on recognition can be made by the competent authority.

Certified Portuguese translation – what to check before official submission

A certified translation for official use is prepared by an appointed permanent court interpreter for Portuguese, subject to availability and the receiving authority’s requirements. Before accepting the assignment, we check the country of issue, regional terminology and the request of the body to which the translation is submitted. If direct certification is unavailable, we ask the relevant authority to confirm whether an alternative is acceptable. Before you order, we also check the number of copies, whether the translation must be attached to the original or a copy, and any Apostille requirements.

Portuguese interpretation for meetings and official procedures

We arrange interpreting between Portuguese and Croatian for business meetings, appointments with a notary or registrar, court and administrative proceedings and other official appointments agreed in advance. If the organiser or relevant authority requires an appointed permanent court interpreter, please tell us when you enquire. We confirm the booking once we have checked the location, date, duration, subject and any documents needed for preparation.

Authentication of the Portuguese document for international use

Before using a document abroad, ask the receiving organisation whether it requires a certified translation, an Apostille, other legalisation or a combination of these. Confirm the requirements before arranging the translation. For practical guidance, see our Apostille guide.

Portuguese translation price estimate after document review

For Portuguese, document translation and interpreting are priced differently. Translation costs depend on the length and complexity of the document, legibility, stamps, certification and deadline. Interpreting costs depend on the duration, location, preparation and any travel required. The final amount is affected by the regional variant, the number of official elements, the specialist knowledge required and the certification. Your quote sets out the total price, the deadline, the availability of certification and the delivery arrangements.
