Court interpreter for the Ukrainian language – documents from Ukraine, Cyrillic and transliteration
• Ukrainian and Russian sections of a document must be distinguished
• Patronymics and the Latin-script spelling of names are part of personal identification
• Older documents may use Russian or a different transliteration
Ukrainian documents require distinguishing Ukrainian from Russian text, especially for older documents and seals. We harmonize the Latin notation of the name, patronymic and place of birth with the passport so that the same person is not shown differently in multiple documents.
Ukrainian is written in the Cyrillic alphabet, and the official Latin-script spelling of the name may differ from the transliteration that the translator would have obtained by independent transcribing. That is why we rely on a passport or other official Latin document for personal documents. Older documents may contain Russian parts, which must be recognized before evaluation. You can browse other language pairs among the services for European languages.
When is a court interpreter needed for the Ukrainian language?
Most often, birth and marriage certificates, diplomas, certificates of criminal record, documents for work and residence, court decisions and powers of attorney are translated. If one document contains Ukrainian, Russian and English text, all language parts are recorded in scope.
Ukrainian documents that we most often translate
- Birth and marriage certificates, certificates of marital status and citizenship
- Criminal record certificates, residence and status
- Diplomas, certificates, transcripts and academic certificates
- Employment contracts and residence documents
- Court decisions, powers of attorney and notarial documents
- Business contracts, registers and technical documentation
This list covers commonly requested documents, but is not exhaustive. You can also send another type of document for Ukrainian translation, we pay particular attention to Ukrainian Cyrillic, possible Russian parts, official transliteration of names, dates, stamps and issuers.
Ukraine: Cyrillic name, passport transliteration and older Russian records
With Ukrainian documents, one of the most important checks is matching the personal name in Cyrillic with the Latin entry in the passport. Patronymics, different transliterations and older documents with Russian text can create apparent discrepancies that need to be explained rather than arbitrarily “corrected”.
For personal names, the official Latin form from the passport is preferred. If an older document uses a different Russian or Soviet notation, we keep the difference transparent and do not try to hide it.
Travel record and transliteration
If the Latin form in the passport deviates from the literal transliteration of the Cyrillic alphabet, for official purposes we generally follow the passport record and record the original form when necessary to link the documents.
Patronymy and name structure
Ukrainian documents often state the first name, patronymic and surname. In the Croatian translation, we do not remove the patronymic or turn it into another surname; we transmit it as a separate part of the personal name when it is so stated in the original.
Older and multilingual documents
Older documents may contain Russian or Soviet-era forms. If the document is not entirely in Ukrainian, before the offer we mark all the languages and agree on the scope so that stamps, notes and reverse sides are covered.
Document authentication from Ukraine – what to check before ordering
A certified translation for official use is prepared by an appointed permanent court interpreter for Ukrainian, subject to availability and the receiving authority’s requirements. Before accepting the assignment, we check Ukrainian Cyrillic, possible Russian parts, official transliteration of names, dates, stamps and issuer. If direct certification is unavailable, we do not assume a substitute procedure, but ask for confirmation from the competent authority. Before you order, we also check the number of copies, whether the translation must be attached to the original or a copy, and any Apostille requirements.
Interpretation: Ukrainian and Croatian in official and business situations
We arrange interpreting for business meetings, appointments with a notary or registrar, conversations with the employer, court and administrative proceedings and other official appointments agreed in advance. For the Ukrainian language, we check the variant or regional form when relevant, location, date, duration and topic before booking. If the organiser or competent authority requires the presence of a permanent court interpreter, this should be stated when sending the request.
Apostille and legalisation for a document from Ukraine
Before using a document abroad, ask the receiving organisation whether it requires a certified translation, an Apostille, other legalisation or a combination of these. Confirm the requirements before arranging the translation. For practical guidance, see our Apostille guide.
What we check before confirming the Ukrainian translation
Before quoting, we check three things in particular: the Ukrainian and Russian sections of the document must be distinguished; the patronymic and the Latin notation of the name are part of the person’s identification; older documents may use Russian or a different transliteration. We then confirm the scope, source and target languages, available form of certification, total price, deadline and delivery arrangements. Your quote reflects the actual work involved, rather than an estimate based only on page count.
What to send for an accurate assessment of a document from Ukraine
- Submit complete copies of documentation for the Ukrainian language; omitted stamps or notes may change the scope of the translation.
- Specify the source and target languages, the country of issue, the purpose of use, the requested deadline and information about the certification. In particular, we will check Ukrainian Cyrillic, possible Russian parts, official transliteration of names, dates, stamps and issuers.
- When we determine the content and direction of the Ukrainian translation, we will inform you whether the item can be accepted and indicate the total amount, deadline and delivery arrangements.
- Once you accept our quote, we translate your document and carry out a final review. We deliver the digital file and any certified paper copies as agreed.
What affects the price and deadline of document translation from Ukraine?
For a written translation, we check the scope, format, professional requirements, readability, source and target languages and type of certification. For interpreting, the offer includes duration, location, preparation and possible route. Mixed Ukrainian-Russian documents or older documents with different name entries require additional language verification. We state the exact amount and deadline only after reviewing the material and confirming the availability of the appropriate specialist.
