Dari court interpreter – Afghan documents in Dari

What you need to know
• Dari is not automatically treated as the same service as Farsi
• an Afghan document may also contain Pashto
• the Latin record of the name and place is aligned with the passport

An Afghan document in Dari should be distinguished from Farsi and Pashto, although the languages are in contact and may appear in the same document. Personal names and places often have several Latin transcriptions, so we link the official record with the passport and all available identification documents. Information about the procedure is available on the site certified translations by court interpreters.

Dari is the standard variant of the Persian language in Afghanistan, but for professional translation purposes we do not automatically combine it with Iranian Farsi. Afghan documents may contain both Dari and Pashto, and sometimes English. We determine the language of each part before confirming the scope and certification. An overview of related services can be found on the page Asian languages.

When is a court interpreter needed for the Dari language?

Most often, personal documents, family documents, school certificates, diplomas, statements, documents for work and residence, and court or administrative documents are translated. For protection procedures or official communication, an interpreting may be necessary, which is agreed upon according to the topic and language variant.

Afghanistan: Dari and Pashto can be on the same document

An Afghan document should not automatically be identified as Dari. Official documents may contain Dari, Pashto or both languages, which use visually similar scripts. Before accepting the assignment, we identify the language of each section and check the calendar and Latin-script spelling of personal details.

We use official Latin-script spellings of names and places where available. Every language section, seal and reverse side is included in the assessment.

Tazkira and personal documents

In the case of identification documents, including the tazkira, we check the full record of the name, the father’s name when given, the place, the document number and all stamps. We compare the Latin form with a passport because the transliteration can vary.

Solar Hijri dates

Afghan documents may use the solar Hijri calendar. We do not convert the date mechanically; first we check which calendar was used and in the translation we clearly convey the original date and, when necessary, the corresponding Gregorian date.

Dari, Farsi and Pashto

Dari is closely related to Persian Farsi, but we process a document from Afghanistan as Dari when that is the actual language of the document. Pashto is a separate language and is not included in the translation without a proper language check.

Document certification from Afghanistan – what to check before ordering

For official use, we first check whether there is a permanent court interpreter for the given language available for the requested language pair and whether the body to which the document is submitted accepts this form. If direct certification is unavailable, we ask the relevant authority to confirm whether an alternative is acceptable. Before quoting, we check whether the content is Dari, Farsi or Pashto, multilingual parts, Arabic-Persian script, official Latin-script spelling of the name and an acceptable authentication method. We also confirm the number of copies, whether the translation must be attached to the original or a copy, and any Apostille or other legalisation requirements specified by the recipient.

Oral interpretation: Dari and Croatian in official and business situations

We arrange interpreting for business meetings, appointments with a notary or registrar, conversations with the employer, court and administrative proceedings and other official appointments agreed in advance. For the Dari language, before booking, we check the variant or regional form when relevant, place, date, duration and topic. If the organiser or competent authority requires the presence of a permanent court interpreter, this should be stated when sending the request.

Apostille and legalisation for a document from Afghanistan

A certified translation and an Apostille serve different purposes. Legalisation requirements depend on where the document was issued, where it will be used and the receiving authority. Before ordering, check whether you need the original or a certified copy, and whether legalisation must come before translation. You can find practical advice in our Apostille guide.

What we check before confirming a given translation

Before quoting, we check three things in particular: dari is not automatically treated as the same service as farsi; an Afghan document may also contain Pashto; the Latin record of the name and place is aligned with the passport. We then confirm the scope, source and target languages, available form of certification, total price, deadline and delivery arrangements. Your quote reflects the actual work involved, rather than an estimate based only on page count.

What to send for an accurate assessment of a document from Afghanistan

  1. For a Dari translation evaluation, send clear copies of the entire document, including reverse sides, stamps and attachments.
  2. Specify the source and target languages, the country of issue, the purpose of use, the requested deadline and information about the certification. In particular, we will check whether the content is Dari, Farsi or Pashto, multilingual parts, Arabic-Persian script, official Latin-script spelling of names and an acceptable authentication method.
  3. By reviewing the document, we determine the actual scope and required expertise, and then confirm the certification, price, deadline and number of copies.
  4. Once you accept our quote, we translate the document and check the language and details before delivery. We agree in advance whether you need a digital file, a paper copy or both.

What affects the price and deadline of document translation from Afghanistan?

The price of a written translation is mostly influenced by the amount of text, topic expertise, legibility, stamps, source and target languages, certification and deadline. Duration, location, preparation and travel expenses are important for interpreting. Multilingual Afghan documents and the need to identify a rare language pair can add time and cost. We state the exact amount and deadline only after reviewing the material and confirming the availability of the appropriate specialist.
